methanol (CH3 OH), Also known as methyl alcohol or wood alcohol, is a colorless, highly flammable liquid with an alcohol-like odor. It is mainly manufactured industrially and is used as a versatile raw material for chemical products, fuels and solvents. Methanol is completely soluble in water — but even in small amounts it is harmful to health.

applications:

  • Manufacture of plastics, paints, adhesives
  • Use as a solvent in industry and laboratories
  • Use as a fuel
  • Application in biodiesel production:
    • Methanol is the most commonly used alcohol in biodiesel production. During transesterification, methanol reacts with triglycerides (fats and oils) to form fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel) and glycerol.
