Description Areas of application of glycerol:

Glycerol (96%) is the top product of the distillation of glycerol. The glycerol top product contains traces of low-boiling organic by-substances and volatile impurities, which originate from the crude glycerol in the upstream production process.

Depending on the raw material base and process management, typical accompanying substances may be in traces:

  • low molecular weight alcohols (e.g. methanol)
  • Organic acids or esters
  • aldehydes or ketones

The top product is specifically separated to ensure the quality and purity of the distilled glycerin and is therefore a process-related by-product of glycerol processing.

Glycerol (96%) is used as an example:

  • for the production of biogas and biofuels
  • as a carbon source in wastewater treatment
  • as a raw material for glycerol distillation
  • as a solvent/moisturizer in technical applications (e.g. paint and varnish industry)
